THE KATA ASSOCIATION

We had learned over and over during our school days about the basic needs of man and food is one of them. Our cooks, Narasimha and Shiva, they behaved as if they were 'Nala'. They cooked food in the filthiest of environments and was quite savourless. Even though, we tried to eat, the quantity of the food given could never satisfy our appetite. So thanks to both of them we frequently experienced, or lived with the threat of experiencing the physical sensation of desiring food - hunger. We tried going out to restaurants to satisfy it. But the food was very costly in the city. "Necessity is the mother of inventions", and it was the birth of "KATA ASSOCIATION" in Hyderabad. I dont know who started it, but they were awful a lot members. There were four function halls in the neighborhood of our hostel and we always witness the food being wasted and dumped on the road sides. Some of the chaps decided to act against this and became the members of KATA ASSOCIATION . KATAS (that's how the members are known), will attend these functions and eat without being noticed by anyone.

KATAS are characterised with
  • formal dressing
  • style of eating
  • quantity of food eaten
  • not an ogle
  • serious looking face
  • ...........
Cyril was the chief propagandist. My roommate Sarath, whom we affectionately called 'bebu' was an ardent supporter of this movement. It was a movement whose support base was always increasing. Later a number of Malayalees from my hostel joined the movement including Shinto, hari (my collegemates), fradaric (my roommate). This made me a part of this movement, even though i was against this idea earlier. The idea was so radical so that it became irresistable for the other Malayalees. It was just like a social network. We met new people and made lot of new friends. Later the KATA ASSOCIATION expanded its support base.  A lot of non keralites joined and became KATAS. Now KATA MOVEMENT has become the 2nd largest movement in Hyderabad after TELENGANA!!
